Maria Sharapova has ended her upsetting losing streak in the finals against world number one Victoria Azarenka. The second-ranked Russian cruised past the Belarusian 6-1, 6-4 to win the Porsche Grand Prix for her first title of the year.

The Moscow News informs that a gang of motorcycle bandits is terrorizing the city's lady drivers. Police have recorded a string of cases in which lone female drivers while waiting in traffic have had the window of their cars smashed and their handbags snatched. The window-breaking bag snatcher then escapes by jumping on an awaiting motorcycle being driven by an accomplice.

Angela Merkel is planning to boycott next month's Euro 2012 football tournament in Ukraine unless imprisoned opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko is released. She is also urging her ministers to do the same.
The German chancellor's decision came as the former Ukrainian prime minister's daughter made an impassioned plea to the German government to "save the life" of her mother, who is has spent 10 days on hunger strike.

Anastasia Pozdnyakova of Russia won gold in women's synchronized diving 1m springboard event at the Russian diving championship in St. Petersburg, vesti.ru informs. Finishing with 290,05 points made Anastasia a winner. Nadezhda Bazhina and Olga Kulemina took silver and bronze.

World number one Victoria Azarenka from Belarus booked her place in the final of the Stuttgart WTA clay-court tournament with a 6-1, 6-3 semifinal win over Agnieszka Radwanska on Saturday.
Russia's Maria Sharapova took over Petra Kvitova. The Russian beat the Czech in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(3), sports.yahoo.com writes.

WDC European Ballroom Championships 2012 was conducted in Moscow in late April to culminate the a series of regional qualifying tournaments that took place around Europe over the last year. 38 ballroom-dancing couples from 18 countries converged on the Kremlin to tango their hearts out and battle for the ultimate title of champion.
Seven ballroom dance and six Latin dance couples competed in the final championship round. Valerio Colantoni and Yulia Spesivtseva of Russia were placed 2nd in the European Ballroom Championships. In Russia's national Latin dance championship, 1st place were Sergei Surkov and Melia (Agnieszka Melnicka); Anton Karpov and Yekaterina Lapayeva took 2nd; and Yevgeny Smagin and Polina Kazachenko were placed 3rd.

According to the latest Yahoo news , Maria Sharapova needed more than three hours to complete a marathon three-set comeback against US Open winner Sam Stosur to reach Saturday's semi-finals at the Stuttgart WTA clay-court tournament. A high-quality match ended with 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 Sharapova's victory featuring her among world's top four players who reached Porsche Tennis Grand Prix semis.

Interfax writes that the Union of Muslim Women of Russia had a foundation congress in Moscow on Thursday. Among the forum participants were leaders of women's organizations from Russia, the CIS countries, Turkey, and Iran, as well as scientists, authorities, and members of the public. This will be a public organization dealing with the rights of Muslim women providing aid and assistance in difficult life situations and employment, help combat family violence.

The best of the best! Russia's top athletes in different types of martial arts have been honored at the Golden Belt awards ceremony in Moscow. Women's Best Athlete of the Year was awarded to Svetlana Galyant, an eight-time Sambo world champion, Russia Today informs. The Golden Belt awards are annually handed out by the Russian Martial Arts Union.

German President Joachim Gauck has cancelled a visit to Ukraine planned for next month in protest at the violent treatment of jailed former Ukrainian prime ministerJulia Tymoshenko, Kyiv Post writes.
Gauck, a former human rights activist from communist East Germany, had been due to attend a gathering of central European heads of state in Yalta in mid-May. Despite Germany's strongly critical stance on the Tymoshenko case, Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle this week ruled out a boycott of the European soccer championship that Ukraineis due to co-host with its EU neighbour Poland this summer.

A commercial, which warned Dutch women against letting their husbands and boyfriends travel to Ukraine for Euro 2012, has outraged the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry. The "Keep him home" ad began airing on national television in the Netherlands in anticipation of this summer's European football championships. The video suggests it's "dangerous" for Dutch men to go to Ukraine as there are too many beautiful ladies in the country. Ukrainian authorities find the video discriminating, fuelling ethnic hatred and unfair to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.

At the start of the year, many commentators predicted that the Russian pole vault champion Yelena Isinbaeva would retire because of a string of setbacks, notably injuries and poor form. But Isinbaeva has confounded her critics by recapturing her best form and, at the age of 29, she is not only determined to carry on with her career, but has set her sights on a new world record and winning another gold medal at this summer's Olympic Games in London.

A Russian woman has complained to the Constitutional Court over a government decree banning women from working as subway train drivers. The woman has been trying to get the job for years. After the Russian Supreme Court turned down her complaint, the woman went to the Constitutional Court arguing that the decree is in conflict with the Russian Constitution and the Labor Code, Ria Novosti writes.

Russia has selected a 15-year-old girl to compete in the pool at the Olympic Games in London this August. Maria Baklakova will be part of the wome's 4 x 200 meter relay team after finishing third in the 200 meter freestyle at the Russian trials Saturday, Ria Novosti informs.
