One of the world's most exquisite luxury delicacies, black caviar, has been degraded to "fast food" in Russia, a country of true originals. The first ever championship of the fastest eating of black caviar was just held in Moscow. The event drew crowds of serious Russian foodies willing to take part in the one-off culinary contest. The challenge was to eat as much of the expensive product as possible. Although it is supposed to be gauche to eat more than two spoonfuls of caviar, usually served in tiny amounts on halves of hard-boiled eggs or thin toast, Russian gourmands had to treat themselves to half a liter of the delicacy.

Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov of Russia have won the World Team Trophy figure skating event in Tokyo. Bazarova and Larionov counted a fall on the throw triple flip and had unison issues on their side-by-side jumps, but they were able to take the pairs' competition by squeezing out a narrow win in the free skate. Their 180.70 gave Team Russia the win and 12 points. The duo performed better than Meagan Duhameland Eric Radford of Canada, who were given silver medals, the Voice of Russia informs.

Tomks school-girl Katya Rud has become the winner of annual contest and awarded the honorable title of "the Siberian of the Year 2012". Over 3 thousand Internet users voted for the girl who helped save 3 kids from the burning house, dni.ru writes.
The fire broke out in one of the Tomsk apartments on 1 December 2011. A girls creaming for help from the second floor window was noticed by the local tax-driver, who rushed to rescue her. He climbed window lattice of the first floor and shouted to the girl to jump on his hands. Yet Katya refused to jump first and leave her 3 junior brothers in the burning apartment. She transferred them one after another to the man. Once her brothers were safe she jumped herself. When the fire brigade arrived, all the children were successfully rescued.
Itar Tass reports that a Russian citizen, Khabarovsk native Anna Filimonova was found dead in a Yokohama apartment on April 20.The Japanese police have called the case a murder. They said the Russian woman died of multiple knife wounds in the chest and stomach. The body was found by the girl's acquaintances - citizens of Japan and Peru. They were taken to a police station for testifying. The police also search for the murder weapon, which the assailant might have dumped into a river.

"The first all-Russian book putsch" will take place in Russia on 20 April. More than 750 libraries, museums, galleries, cultural centers and bookshops across 90 cities will take part in the Night of the Library. Every library has created its own program, which include such activities as meetings with authors, workshops, competitions and readings.
The activists, who organized a group and managed to get permission from the department of culture hope this campaign will help develop libraries, museums and bookshops in Russia, as well as make more people read, the Moscow News writes.

120 beauties from all over the world will compete for "Miss Universe" title later this year. As the list of 50 winners of national beauty pageants around the world was made public, people start betting on the winner. According to people's comments the 18-year old Russian contestant is among top 10, Russia Today informs. Russia is represented by a student Elizaveta Golovanova from a small town of Safonovo in Western Russia. She was crowned Miss Russia in March.

After finishing second in the world in 2009 to failing to even reach the semifinals in 2011, a Russian swimmer Anastasia Zueva posted the fastest time in the world this year in the finals of the 200 backstroke of national swimming championship. Her time 2:06.59 has made Zueva the lone Russian competitor in the event.

news.mst.edu reports that Dr. Irina Ivliyeva, assistant professor of Russian in the arts, languages and philosophy department at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been named 2012 Woman of the Year by Missouri S&T for for outstanding teaching for 14 consecutive years.
The Woman of the Year award is given annually in recognition of efforts to improve the campus environment for women and minorities.
Ivliyeva earned a Ph.D. in linguistics from the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow in 1997. In 2006 she was assigned an assistant professor of Russian at Missouri University. She is an author of 2 Russian language books.

A Russian cinema and theater actress, People's Artist of the R.S.F.S.R. Svetlana Nemolyayeva marks her 75th birthday, vesti.ru writes. Her name has already become an icon of the Soviet cinema. Over 40 roles on the screen, numerous parts on the stage of Moscow's Mayakovskly Theater where she has worked over 50 years.
She won the ultimae love of millions of Soviet TV viewers by the role of naïve and sensitive Olya Ryzhova in never dying Eldar Ryazanov's hit "Sluzhebnyy roman" (1977). Further roles in "Garazh", "Nebesa obetovannye" proved her reputation of one of most genuine Soviet actresses. Svetlana Nemolyayeva markes her birthday playing in the play "The Fruits of Enlightenment" that she devotes to her husband, Alexander Lazarev, also an actor, who passed last year.

A Norwegian court has deprived a Russian citizen, Irina Bergset, of parental rights and awarded custody of her 4-year-old son to her Norwegian ex-husband, whom she accuses of sexual abuse of her son. The Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case against the former husband of Irina Bergset.

Winners of the national Golden Mask award announced at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Most prestigious theater awards went to Russian theater actress Svetlana Zamarajeva and ballet dance Anna Khamzina. Albina Shagimuratova was recognized as Best Opera Actress. The Golden Mask Award for best stage performance this year was awarded to Moscow's Vahtangov Theatre for the performance of Chekhov's play "Uncle Vanya". The Best Ballet Production award went to Por Vos Muero, staged by Nacho Duato at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theater.
The Golden Mask is the National Theatre Award established in 1994 by the Theatre Union of Russia for productions in all genres of theatre art, including drama, operetta, musical, and puppet theatre.

newsru.com informs that according to the poll conducted by "Russia for everyone" public movement, over 70% of Russians voted for Russia being a secular state. Both Orthodox Christians and people of other religions highlighted that the church and the state must be separated. According to Russian constitution it is, yet the church leaders are actively interfering into social and political life in the country. Over 74 % of Russians also voted against the introduction of tax to support religious communities.

washingtonpost.com writes that Russian "Cinderella supermodel" Natalia Vodianova has made it on to The Sunday Times Rich List of British fashion stars. The British-based supermodel, who turned 30 earlier this year, is reportedly worth £16m.
Vodianova's companions on the list of the wealthiest modeling stars are Keira Knightley, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Emma Watson, among others.

35-year-old Yevgenia Chirikova from Russia was among six community leaders from around the world awarded the $150,000 Goldman Environmental Prize, given every year to ordinary people who protect their natural communities in extraordinary ways. The prizes, which have been dubbed the Green Nobel Prize, were announced Monday in California.
The young Russian woman repeatedly stood up to bulldozers and baton-wielding police in her efforts to save 2,500 acre Khimki forest, called Moscow's "green lungs" and threatened by $8 billion highway project from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

The former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev has agreed to nominate Russian actresses and charity activists Chulpan Khamatova and Dina Korzun for the Nobel Peace Prize. Gorbachev is a Nobel Peace prize winner himself and therefore has the right to nominate.
The "Gift of Life" foundation is the charitable organization that helps children defeat cancer, and other life-threatening illnesses. It was established in 2006 by Khamatova and Korzun, who are among the most talented and sought-after film and stage actresses in Russia.
More than 200 people have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year, among them former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, Russian human rights activists Lyudmila Alekseeva and Svetlana Gannushkina
