Russian women's gymnastics team has taken silver at the Euro Champs held in Belgium's Brussels. Aliya Mustafina, Viktoria Komova, Anastasiya Grishina, Anastasiay Sidorova and Maria Paseka lost to Romania, the Voice of Russia informs.

Ria Novosti reports that a topless female protestor has attacked the trophy to be awarded at Euro 2012. The woman with the anti-tournament slogan on her bare torso knocked it to the floor at an exhibition in the center of the Ukrainian capital Kiev. She was then detained by police.
The Femen group regularly stages topless protests and said it wanted to highlight how, the group claimed, Euro 2012 would increase prostitution in Ukraine.

Today Russia marks the 67th Victory Day since the surrender of Nazi Germany in the Second World War. Almost 27 Soviet people died in that war, which came to be known in this country as the Great Patriotic War.
Celebrating Victory Day with a military parade on Red Square is a long standing tradition. The first such event was held in 1945 on June 24, more than a month after the defeat of Nazi Germany. Troops who had just returned from the front took part in the mass celebration. 2012 Victory Day parade involved some 14 thousand troops as well as the best hardware the Russian defense ministry has to offer.
The celebration will end in a gunfire salute.

Russian star of "Alye parusa" (The Red Sails) and "Voina i Mir" (War and peace), Soviet and Russian actress and documentary director Jemma Firsova died in Moscow at the age of 77, Itar Tass informs. Her most significant works were World War II documentary films: Jemma Firsova got a state award for the film "Winter and spring of 1945th". Her taking part on creation of TV series "The unknown war" was marked by the Lenin prize.

In Minsk, VIII National Beauty Contest "Miss Belarus-2012" was held on May 4. The winner of the contest and "Miss Photo" is 20-year-old Julia Skalkovich. She lives in Brest and is a student of the construction department of Brest State Technical University. Title of the first Vice-Miss and "Miss Sports" went to 20-year-old student of Homel State Medical College, Victoria Shavel. 20-year-old Brest girl Natalia Brishten became "Miss Top Model."

Russia's female epee fencers won gold in the team event at the 2012 Fencing World Cup's stage in Rio de Janeiro on Monday.
Second and third place went to the teams of Italy and Romania, respectively the Voice of Russia reports.

Russia's Elena Vesnina made it to the Budapest Grand Prix final defeating New Zealand's Marina Erakovic 6-2, 6-3.
She was, however denied the first career singles title being beaten by Italy's Sara Errani in straight sets in the final on the final game on Sunday Ria Novosti reports.

Russian opera diva Anna Netrebko has decided to take a break from the stage for the sake of her family. The singer pulled out of five performances of Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Berlin Staatsoper to spend time with her son. The statement from Netrebko was issued on the opera house's website. The singer apologized for her decision, adding that she had had a "very busy year" and needed to spend time with her toddler.

A Superjob.ru survey has revealed the most respected professions in Russia. Russians feel the most respect towards medical workers, with 29 percent of respondents saying they respected these professionals. The next most valued profession was that of teacher, with 13 percent saying they respected school teachers. Other remaining professions were considerably less respected with only 3 percent of the population valuing rescue workers, executive managers and military officers. The president as a profession was respected by 2 percent of respondents.

Russian women's volleyball team has defeated Serbia 3-1 at the second round of the London Olympics qualifier in Turkey.
On May, 4 Russia will be challenged by Holland and even if it loses it will still have a chance to make it to the Games at the Tokyo qualifier which is to be held in mid May, the Voice of Russia informs.

Pravda.ru informs that Russian women who gave birth in marriages with foreigners outside of Russia no longer have to obtain the consent of their spouses to formalize Russian citizenship for their children. The amendments to the to the citizenship law considered by Russian Duma are supposed to override any discriminatory rules. and help to protect children from overzealous foreign care.
The amendments to the citizenship law were introduced due to the persistent demands of the citizens of the Russian Federation, including those living abroad. In the series of well-known conflicts Russian children become hostages of other countries having been taken by been taken by local guardianship. The decisive factor in these conflicts was whether or not the child had Russian citizenship

According to the poll conducted by Moscow's Anna National Center for the Prevention of Violence about a third of Russian women suffer domestic violence but put up with beatings from their partners and husbands in order to "preserve the family". More that 30 percent of women suffer physical domestic violence. Women aged 30-40 years appeared to be most frequent victims of domestic violence, Ria Novosti writes.

Eugenia Kanishcheva from Simferopol, Ukraine was the the prize-winner of famous Nora Gal Award for translating "How the Leopard Got His Spots" by Rudyard Kipling into Russian, Lenta.ru informs. The award is instituted in commemoration of the outstanding master of Russian literary translation, Nora Gal (1912-1991). She made it possible for millions of Russian-speaking people to read works of O'Henry, Salinger, Fitzgerald, and many more.
